OSRAM: Engineering wellness with Chronogy® eyewear

In 2018, OSRAM, a global pioneer in lighting technology, set its sights on a new horizon. The company began developing a wearable device that could unlock new opportunities in the booming healthcare market. Here’s why OSRAM chose ESCATEC as their design and build partner.

The German Ski Association (DSV) had initially approached OSRAM to help with light therapy solutions after identifying how their athletes’ circadian rhythms were disrupted in late-night events.

This idea sparked the concept of Chronogy® Eyewear - smart glasses designed to deliver biologically optimised light to the wearer. This was a product that had applications beyond athletics, as a healthcare solution for treating jetlag, insomnia and other sleep disorders.

The Challenge

OSRAM wanted to build a lightweight device powered by cutting-edge light therapy technology to help users reset their internal body clocks, improve sleep, and boost alertness. In order to make optimal use of the function and timing of light therapy, it was also necessary to develop a control app with the appropriate communication to the glasses.

With frame designers UVEX on board, they planned a device so comfortable and non-intrusive that users could wear them anywhere - and even continue reading with them on.

Bringing such a complex product to life would require more than advanced optics capabilities. It would demand expertise in customer-centric design, system integration, miniaturised electronics and embedded firmware.

OSRAM also wanted a production-ready prototype ready for the US trade show called CES in just four months. They would need a partner capable of delivering quality at speed and scale.

That partner was ESCATEC.

The Brief

OSRAM’s concept required a product that was:

  • Miniaturised and lightweight

  • Capable of delivering dual light modes:

    🔹 Blue-rich light (~8,000K) for boosting alertness

🔹 Amber light (~2,700K) for relaxation and melatonin support

  • Safe and effective, compliant with all photobiological standards

  • App-controlled via the MyChronogy platform

  • Scalable for future potential mass production

The Solution

ESCATEC’s role: from a vision to a  working product.

As the technical lead and integration partner, ESCATEC took ownership of:

  • Electronics and PCB design

  • Firmware development for light scene control and app connectivity

  • System-level integration of optical, electronic, and mechanical subsystems

  • Prototype production and final assembly

  • Design for Manufacture (DfM) consultation to prepare for scaling

“What made this project unique was the need for total system alignment - optics, user comfort, safety, and power - all within a compact wearable form.”

Martin Reuter, Head of Realization Center, OSRAM

The Results
  • Fully functional prototype delivered in just 4 months

  • 100 units produced for trials and demos

  • The world’s first mobile, app-controlled Human Centric Lighting eyewear

“The collaboration with ESCATEC and its specialists proved to be a perfect match in the development and industrialisation of our Human Centric Lighting glasses. The expertise on all sides complemented each other, and the result was the world’s first app-controlled HCL wearable."

Martin Reuter, Head of Realization Center, OSRAM

Quality and speed were everything in this project. But so was reliability.
What made ESCATEC the right partner wasn’t just their technical capabilities - it was the ability to move fast, make decisions quickly, and bring clarity across teams.

For companies like OSRAM, ESCATEC proves it’s possible to take a complex idea and make it real - on time, on budget, and with production readiness built in from the start.
